Jake's work is a drawing of three deceased giraffes, strawn around a dried up reservoir. The giraffes perished trying to get the last drop of water, but got stuck into the mud. He created this project with simple materials, colored pencils and paper.

Jake an inexperienced artist and this was his first serious piece of art. This is why he chose to do this project, as he wanted to explore creative ways to express his views.

Jake was inspired by artists such as Rose Simpson, Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich and Melissa Shaginoff. He was particularly inspired by themes of death shown by each of these artists. Rose Simpson’s art was very focused on the fact of consumerism.

Especially showing the new car surrounded by people dressed in Mad Max-inspired clothing. Jake think this shows such a powerful view of consumerism, especially how invested people are in material goods, especially in the United States.

Jake's work relates to climate change as it shows an effect of climate change, water running out and ecosystems and animals suffering. His art relates to consumerism specifically, as the giraffes are a metaphor for people, as well as an image that can be interpreted as an effect of consumerism.

The way that the giraffes died is a comment on consumerism, as they drank from the water hole until it became dry, but died from getting stuck in the mud. This is to show humanity if they consume too heavily, consequences will follow and the natural world, as well as the daily lives of humans, will suffer.
